The Challenge

Despite popular belief at the time, Wild Turkey is an incredible whiskey; aged longer, made using non-GMO grains, and created by distilling legends Eddie and Jimmy Russell. Yet it was seen as an old-fashioned, low quality choice, drunk by rednecks and frat boys who didn’t know any better. The brand had been neglected: inconsistent across channels with messaging that reinforced its issues. Bourbon was on fire yet Wild Turkey was stagnant. A new global strategy was needed to unify teams and lay the foundations for a revamped identity and campaign, future-proofing the brand for years to come.

The Strategic Opportunity

Before starting ethnographies, we wondered if Wild Turkey lovers would be hard to find, and instead we'd meet lukewarm likers who drank it because their parents did. In fact, Wild Turkey was a proud and intentional choice—gritty, quirky, and far more interesting than biggest competitor Jack Daniel’s—the Disneyland of whiskey and panic order at the bar. In a category that was all about tradition, and where young men felt pressured to follow the crowd, we saw a huge opportunity for Wild Turkey to stand for having the conviction to go your own way instead. So instead of minimizing Wild Turkey's weird and unique qualities, we reframed them: the brand was not old fashioned but authentic; its liquid strength a reflection of strength of character; its strange brand name a symbol of being yourself. Once known as the ‘bourbon with (a bad) attitude’ Wild Turkey could become the brand that could be bottled, but never tamed.

The Execution

Wild Turkey embarked on a full reimagining of its brand experience: its identity and packaging evolved to be more authentic, crafted, and unapologetically bold. The unusual details of its brand mascot were heroed instead of softened. And Matthew McConaughey was hired as the brand's first ever creative director—an embodiment of the brand's spirit, he starred in brand campaigns, helped shape the brand's creative vision, and collaborated on a new whiskey, Longbranch Bourbon.
